What is an IQ Test?
An IQ test is an assessment that provides a score that measures a range of cognitive abilities and is intended to serve as a measure of an individual’s intellectual abilities and potential. IQ tests are one of the most commonly administered psychological tests.
To understand what these test scores really mean, it may be instructive to look at exactly how these test scores are calculated. Today, many tests are standardized and scores are calculated by comparing individual performance and age group data of the individual. While many tests use similar methods to obtain scores, it’s important to remember that each test and scoring method is different.
History of IQ Tests
Alfred Binet, a French psychologist, was the first to officially develop an intelligence test. A form of Binet’s original test is still used today as the Stanford-Binet intelligence test. Later, Charles Spearman, also a psychologist, developed a general concept of intelligence, or a general test of mental ability to perform a wide variety of cognitive tasks.
Psychologist Robert Yerkes developed IQ tests to test US Army soldiers enlisted during the First World War. In the 1950s, David Wechsler developed IQ tests for use with children and adults. These tests still remain popular today.
Curious About IQ Tests

Signs of giftedness may appear in infancy and continue into the toddler and preschool years. Testing for giftedness and high IQ usually occurs around age 5.
